April Fool's Day can be so much fun, especially for parents who have a whole kitchen at their disposal, for cooking up some tricks and pranks. April Fool's food has long been a staple in families with a sense of fun, humor and adventure.
This April 1, have some fun with April Fool food pranks, by cooking up some surprises for meals for your family.
Fool’s Fried Egg
Scoop whipped cream onto a plate and place a canned peach half (with the cut side down) in the middle. It’ll look like a fried egg, complete with yolk.
Wormy Apple
Using a small apple corer, cut a hole in the side of an apple and insert a gummy worm. This is a fun prank for kids who take their lunch to school.
Meaty Cupcakes
Place foil cupcake liners in a muffin tin. Fill each cup with meatloaf mix and bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes or until cooked through. Mix up some whipped potatoes and add a little bit of food coloring for a pastel frosting look. Remove the meatloaf cups from the muffin tin and cover the tops with colored mashed potatoes. They’ll look like cupcakes but taste like their favorite meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
Hot Dog! It’s Cake!
Cut a loaf pound cake into a rectangle about the size of a hot dog bun. Cut a ridge into the middle. Fill with two Twinkies that have been covered with red icing. Place them end to end in the ridge of the “bun” and smooth the icing over to make it appear that it’s one long hot dog. Squirt the top with red frosting for “ketchup,” yellow frosting for “mustard” and chopped up green gummy candies for “relish.”
Buggy Ice Cubes
Fill an ice cube tray with water and place a tiny plastic fly or ant in each one. Serve drinks with a few “bug infested” ice cubes.
From a Blue Cow?
Add some blue food coloring to the milk in a carton and watch your kids’ faces as the blue milk comes pouring into their cups. This works best with milk cartons that are not see-through.
Dirt Pudding
Placed in a flower pot with some plastic flowers and gummy worms, this pudding has a topping of crushed Oreo cookies that will make your family think they’re eating dirt straight from the backyard garden.
- 1 20-ounce package Oreos
- 4 tablespoons butter, at room temperature
- 8 ounces cream cheese
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 5¼-ounce packages instant vanilla pudding
- 3½ cups milk
- 12 ounces Cool Whip
In a blender, crush 4-8 Oreos at a time, setting them aside into a bowl. Continue until all Oreos are crushed. Using a mixer, in a smaller mixing bowl cream together softened butter and cream cheese. Add powdered sugar. Using a mixer, in a larger mixing bowl combine pudding mix and milk. Add Cool Whip and blend well. Add cream cheese mixture to pudding mixture and mix well. Place drain tray under a new, clean plastic flower pot. Block each hole in the bottom with a dot of the pudding mixture to keep cookie crumbs inside the container. Reserve at least 12 heaping tablespoons of crumbs for the top layer. Start with a layer of crushed cookies, then creamed mixture and continue to layer until finished, ending with crushed cookies on top. Refrigerate overnight. Garnish with plastic flowers and gummy worms. Serve pudding with a small gardening trowel.
